If you’re looking for a fun and scenic adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains, check out our guided hike in Elkmont along the river. This hike is led by Dan “Intrepidan” Stockdale, an Appalachian Trail and survivalist expert who knows the area like the back of his hand. He will show you some of the best spots to enjoy the views, the wildlife, and the history of this former logging camp and resort community.<\/p>\n
The hike starts from the Little River Trailhead in Elkmont, where you can see some of the old homes that were part of the Appalachian Club, a wealthy resort that existed before the national park was established. You will follow the Little River Trail for about 2.5 miles, passing by Huskey Branch Falls, a 20-foot cascade that flows into the river. Along the way, Dan will share some stories and tips about hiking and surviving in the wilderness.<\/p>\n
At the Cucumber Gap Trail junction, you will turn right and loop back to Elkmont via Jakes Creek Trail. This part of the hike is more secluded and peaceful, and you might spot some river otters or other animals. You will also visit the Avent Cabin, a historic structure that was built by a local artist in 1850. The cabin is decorated with paintings and carvings that reflect the beauty of the Smokies.<\/p>\n
The total distance of the hike is about 5.6 miles, and it takes around 2 hours to complete. The difficulty level is easy to moderate, with some gentle climbs and descents. The hike is suitable for all ages and skill levels, as long as you are comfortable walking on gravel roads and dirt trails. Dan will provide coffee and danishes, but you should bring your own snacks and extra layers of clothing.<\/p>\n
